Once a Native American hunting and fishing stronghold, Biloxi slowly became a resort for landed gentry, and eventually home to Gulf-front mansions built by the wealthy fleeing New Orleans during the early 1800’s Yellow Fever epidemic. In the 1990s, Biloxi began building gaming casinos, and fast became a hot destination for both domestic and international markets. A proliferation of restaurants, spa, golf courses, and other leisure attractions soon followed. In fall, 2005, hurricanes Rita and Katrina swept through, leaving notable destruction in their wakes. Biloxi Bay Bridge, a main drag into town, was destroyed and will take a major public works project to rise again. Beauvoir, the waterfront retirement abode of the Confederacy’s Jefferson Davis, also took a big hit. Yet amid phenomenal wreckage, Greater Biloxi - Gulfport is on the mend, its hopes again bolstered by gaming, again up and running. A post-Katrina Isle of Capri Casino Resort, along with the IP Hotel & Casino, and the Palace Casino raked in more than $63 million in gross revenue in January, 2006, exceeding expectations. Another quartet of casinos including the Beau Rivage Hotel & Casino are set to reopen in 2006, with the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to follow in early 2007. Harrah’s also plans reopening two casinos in Biloxi, where change in state law now allows land-based gambling halls along with the floating variety. Helping illuminate the way: The 65-foot Biloxi Lighthouse, a cast-iron tower built in 1848, and still standing tall. Despite preliminary comeback, travelers to the area are advised to double-check on availability of preferred attractions and restaurants in addition to lodging possibilities before arrival.
